August Heat & Dementia: Staying Safe Together

August has arrived, bringing the dog days of summer—sweltering heat, heavy humidity, and air so thick you can feel it. For most of us, this means cranking the AC and reaching for something cold. But for caregivers of loved ones living with dementia, August presents challenges that go far beyond ordinary discomfort.

Why August Heat Is Especially Dangerous for Those with Dementia

Our aging loved ones are already more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. As we grow older, our bodies become less adept at regulating temperature and signaling thirst. Dementia compounds these risks. Your loved one may not realize they are overheating, may forget to drink water, or may insist on keeping a heavy sweater on despite the scorching heat. Some may wander outside underdressed or become confused about how to use a fan. August’s intense heat and humidity can quickly escalate to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or worse—and your loved one may not be able to communicate that something is wrong.

Your August Safety Checklist

First, make hydration a priority. Don’t wait for your loved one to ask for water—they probably won’t. Offer small cups frequently throughout the day. If plain water is refused, try flavored water, popsicles, watermelon, or broth. Set a timer on your phone to remind you both.

Second, keep a close eye on the environment. Check that your loved one is dressed appropriately—they may layer clothing out of habit. Draw curtains during the hottest part of the day and make sure the AC is working. If wandering is a concern, consider door alarms to prevent unsupervised outings into dangerous heat.

Third, watch for subtle warning signs like flushed skin, rapid breathing, unusual fatigue, increased confusion, or agitation. These can signal your loved one is overheating and needs immediate attention.

Plan Ahead for Extreme Heat

Check weather forecasts daily. On days when temperatures soar, stay indoors with activities like looking through photo albums, listening to favorite music, or simply sitting together in a cool room. If you must go out, schedule trips for early morning or late evening.
