More than a deep cleaning

Spring cleaning for safety: Decluttering to prevent falls

Spring cleaning is about more than fresh air and tidy spaces. For caregivers and aging loved ones, it’s a vital opportunity to reduce fall risks—the leading cause of injury among older adults. A few intentional changes can transform a home from a place of hidden hazards into a sanctuary of safety and independence.

clear the paths

Identify high-traffic routes: bedroom to bathroom, kitchen to living room. Remove obstacles including loose shoes, magazines, pet toys, and charging cords. Even low-profile rugs can cause trips. Secure sentimental rugs with double-sided carpet tape. Rearrange furniture to create wide, straight walkways free of sharp edges.

tackle the rugs

Area rugs are a major fall culprit. Remove small throw rugs, especially near the kitchen sink or bathroom vanity. For necessary rugs on hardwood, ensure they have non-slip backing or grip tape. Repair or remove any rugs with curled edges.

audit the bathroom

Bathrooms pose the highest risk. Clear cluttered counters to prevent items from falling to the floor—bending down increases fall risk. Use shower caddies to keep surfaces clear. Replace long fabric shower curtains with lightweight liners and verify grab bars are securely anchored.

brighten the space

Install motion-activated night lights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Ensure light switches are accessible at the top and bottom of stairs. For loved ones with dementia or vision impairments, reduce glare with window treatments.

clean with dignity

Involve your loved one to preserve their sense of control. Instead of discarding items, ask, “Can we find a safer spot for this?” Frame the work as making the home feel more spacious. Pace yourselves—fatigue leads to rushing.

A season of renewal

At Winter Growth, we believe in nurturing lives of meaning, connection, and independence at every age and stage. Spring is a natural time for renewal—not just for our homes, but for how we approach care. By clearing away clutter and hazards, we create space for what truly matters: peace of mind, safe mobility, and the freedom to live joyfully.

A safer home means less stress for you, the caregiver, and more freedom for your loved one to move about their own space with dignity.
