fall prevention awareness
creating a safer home for your loved one
Falls are one of the most common risks older adults face – but the good news is that many can be prevented. This September, in honor of Fall Prevention Awareness Month, let’s focus on ways you can make your loved one’s home safer and their daily routines more secure.
start with a home safety walk-through
Take a few minutes to walk through your loved one’s home with safety in mind. Ask yourself: “Could this cause a trip, slip, or stumble?”
- Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
- Keep hallways and walkways clear of clutter
- Improve lighting in dim spaces – especially stairways and bathrooms
Even small adjustments can make a big difference in preventing falls.
encourage strength and balance
Movement matters! Regular physical activity improves stability, coordination, and confidence. Gentle options to try include:
- Chair yoga or tai chi for balance
- Short daily walks around the neighborhood or indoors
- Resistance band exercises to build strength
If you’re unsure where to start, a physical therapist can suggest safe, personalized exercises.
embrace assistive devices
Sometimes, a little extra support is exactly what’s needed:
- Install grab bars in bathrooms near toilets and showers
- Encourage use of a cane or walker, if recommended
- Choose sturdy, non-slip footwear for everyday use
Remember, these tools aren’t signs of weakness – they’re confidence-builders that support independence.
By taking proactive steps, you’re not only reducing fall risks, you’re helping your loved one feel safe, steady, and more empowered in their daily life.
